Clyde McPhatter's lover please has been on heavy rotation for me this week, can't seem to get enough of it!
Best known for his work as a founder of The Drifters, Clyde McPhatter was a key figure in the doo wop scene before trying out a solo career and sadly becoming an alcoholic recluse. He died tragically in 1972 after complications from heart, liver and kidney disease brought on by the alcohol abuse…
Not long before he was quoted as saying “I have no fans.”
So wrong!
I grew up with a love of The Drifters, thanks to a mom who never left her musical teenage years behind.
My favorite track is “Lover Please.” How can a song about a sad, desperate plea for saving a relationship from hard ache be so bloody bouncy, peppy and fun? It shouldn’t be, but is. An amazing work, and has been stuck in my head for DAYS! Check it out…
