Song Of The Day: Smashing Pumpkins “Siva” (plus some news)

I’ve been a bad music blogger!  How could I forget to mention the huge news that the Smashing Pumpkins are reissuing all of their earlier work?

I’m a big fan of the Pumpkins, at least the incarnation of the band before the breakup in 2000, so this is a big deal to me.  Will I buy these reissued albums?  I think I’ll probably shell out for at least the first three.  After that, I’m not sure.  I definitely want to get The Aeroplane Flies High, as it’s one of the few Pumpkins items I don’t own.  I think Gish  and Siamese Dream definitely deserve some remastering love.

Song Of The Day: Jimi Hendrix “Midnight”

I have a new Jimi Hendrix album, and this song is on it.  It’s a good one, instrumental.  It has some very killer guitar, as you’d expect with Jimi.  It’s nice to have something I haven’t already heard a thousand times.

Today’s Song Of The Day is “Lowdown” by Boz Scaggs.  Before hearing this, all I knew about Boz Scaggs was his name.  I thought he was a country artist, for some reason, but this is surprisingly funky and soulful.

Song Of The Day: The Pretenders “Middle Of The Road”

Yes, it’s not even 3 PM and I’ve already decided.

What’s not to love about this song?  The jangly guitars?  The sweet guitar solo?  Chrissie Hynde’s combination of sex appeal and sassiness?  The growling harmonica at the end?

My favorite thing, though, is Martin Chambers’ very spot-on drumming.  The man doesn’t miss a beat on this one, and pounds it out like he means it.  It’s not the flashiest drumming in the world, but it certainly is powerful. 

This is one of my favorite Pretenders songs from a very underrated album.

Song Of The Day: School Of Seven Bells “Dust Devil”

I really enjoy School Of Seven Bells’ latest album, Disconnect From Desire. It’s more of a proper album than their debut.  It has a particular sound, a flow, an energy.  I immediately fell in love with it when I first heard it, and now I own it.

“Dust Devil” is the third song on the album, and it follows the second track “Heart Is Strange” quite well.  It has a similar sound, but just a little different.  The harmonies are tighter, for sure. What I really love about this song is the constant keyboard pulse going on in the background.  I also like the girls’ voices and how they draw out the vowels on each line.  It makes the song have a haunting, soothing quality.  The third thing I like is the repetition of some lines and notes that break up the monotony of the rest of the song.  Somehow it all works together well.  Good job, School of Seven Bells!

Ska and Reggae Spotlight: The Itals “In A Dis Ya Time/Harbour View Rock”

Welcome to another feature I hope to continue on this blog: the Ska and Reggae spotlight.  Really, it’s just going to be any music from Jamaica that I like.  I don’t really care about the labels.  Salana will not be contributing to this because she’s not a fan of Jamaican music.  Fair enough!  I am, though, so I’ll share with you some of my favorite tunes, including new discoveries.

Today’s installment is The Itals and their song “In A Dis Ya Time/Harbour View Rock”.  The first part of the song is “In A Dis Ya Time,” and judging by the name of the group and the use of the word Brethren, I’m guessing it has to do with Rasta.  It’s a slow, easy, soulful piece of music with some really great singing and harmonies.

But the true gem of this cut comes in the second part, “Harbour View Rock.”  It’s a dub mix of the first song with some really killer trombone playing!  I’m becoming a big fan of trombone in both jazz and ska, so this is right up my alley.  Trombone plays a huge part in the ska sound, with the famous Skatalite Don Drummond as the best-known ska trombonist. 

Check this out if you’re like me and you like some nasty trombone playing.

Song Of The Day: Boo Radleys “Wake Up Boo”

What a perfect little piece of power-pop!  These guys started out as shoegazers, but apparently become more commercial as time went on.  With songs like these, I’m not complaining.  I don’t know if this has been used in any commercials, but if it hasn’t, it should be.

Song Of The Day: Her And The Colours "Look What You Made Me Do"

I have to admit I have a soft spot for girls rockin' out.  I'm increasingly enjoying Joan Jett (saw her live last year, in fact) and I've been known to listen to stuff like the Donnas too.  I also like a catchy hook well-performed, no matter who creates it.  So when I heard today's Song Of The Day, found from a link posted by The Who on Facebook, I immediately fell in love.  Girls (and a guy) in a studio, bashing on guitars, singing a fun, carefree song, harmonies, killer bass, and tons of cuteness.  How can you not like it?  I dare you to listen to this and not like it!
